Elliott Abrams, who pleaded guilty in 1991 to withholding information from Congress in the Iran-contra affair, was promoted to deputy national security adviser to President Bush.
Abrams, who previously was in charge of Middle East affairs, will be responsible for pushing Bush's strategy for advancing democracy.
Apparently Bush doesn't see the built in contradiction here. A man who withheld information from Congress, our instrument of democracy in America, is now in charge of promoting "democracy" worldwide.
Obviously, what we usually think of as democracy is not what Bush has in mind for the world. If his track record is any indication, and its probably the best we have, he wants "democracy" in which he controls the information the public has to make its own decisions. His style is full of hidden agendas, misrepresentations of the facts, outright lies like about the supposed bankruptsy of Social Security made last night, and lots of covert strategies to manipulate the voters to support his agenda and undermine their own.
