Iraq In Katrina's Wake; Are There Other Disturbed Waters?

Jesse Jackson is now doing heavy lifting on the withdrawl from Iraq side of the political divide. He makes some solid points about Katrina being a multiple wake-up call. Is there more to his intent?

This war of choice was built on a false foundation. The Bible says a house built on sand will not withstand the winds. Everything the Bush crowd told us about the war turned out to be false. There was no imminent threat, no weapons of mass destruction. Hussein had no working ties with al Queda and wasn’t involved in the September 11 attacks. We weren’t greeted as liberators. Iraq did not pay for its own reconstruction.

To avoid admitting failure, the administration has just changed the stakes. It has gone from "imminent threat" to justify the invasion, to getting rid of a vicious dictator, to "leading a fight for democracy.” Now it is our army and our National Guard that is breaking under the strain of an occupation for which the administration did not plan.

It is time to go another way. This nation should reassess a foreign policy that is foreign to our values. Let’s put our clients in Iraq on notice. They must take responsibility for their future, for we have done enough. Announce a timetable for bringing the troops home. It is time to turn our attention to rebuilding America. MORE

Katrina may have reactivated the voting block of African Americans. And Jesse Jackson is back in the role of power broker. Could he also be a Vice Presidential candidate? Probably only in his and his supporters dreams. But he will carry influence into the Democratic convention and in the run up to the election in 2008.
