Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Wednesday the Holocaust is a "myth" in another sharp attack on Israel's right to exist that drew immediate harsh criticism from both the Jewish state and from Germany and the European Commission.
Germany's foreign minister blasted the comments as "shocking and unacceptable" and warned that they will influence crucial upcoming nuclear talks between Europe and Iran.
Speaking to thousands of people in the southeastern city of Zahedan, Ahmadinejad said: "Today, they have created a myth in the name of Holocaust and consider it to be above God, religion and the prophets."
They say Ahmadinejad is attempting to retrieve his loss of support within the government of Iran by rattle sabers at Israel. But truly this is even more dangerous than China encouraging protests against Japan. The likelihood of provoking the Israelis is guarenteed. If he succeeds, he will have the support of the people of Iran.
Better we all posture and support Israel verbally, quietly warn them to use restraint.
If we weren't already bogged down in Iraq, perhaps we would have other options. But quiet diplomacy allowing the Iranian government to take care of it's own seems the best course now. If later, it appears he represents the government of Iran, we may have to consider options.
Certainly, no one but Iran wants them to have The Bomb. Clearly, too many would want to use it. Iran doesn't care about casualties. They sacrificed millions of teenagers in human wave attacks defending their borders from Iraq.
